18 April 2008: Short quote from a 1973 magazine interview with Michael Jayston added to the Publicity page. The quote runs thus:

Women's Realm, October 1973 "Man of History" short quote:
When we met, Michael had just fnished playing, by way of a change, one of the most famous fictional characters in English literature, Mr. Rochester, in the BBC's new serialization of Jane Eyre. "It was marvellous stuff to do, a part you can really get your teeth into. I played it once before at drama school, though obviously I was much too young. It was when the film version, with Orson Welles as Rochester, came out, and I thought he was dreadful! He looked magnificent, but I don't think American actors can cope with period dialogue."

23 February 2008: With many thanks to Daniela, the English translation of the Lecturas article is now up!

14 February 2008: A magazine with an article about the series arrived in my mailbox today! The magazine is from Spain, circa 1976, and is called Lecturas. The article is in Spanish, but there are a handful of new pictures! The article and pictures can be found on the Publicity page.
To read the article in Spanish: Article
To view the images: Images

Is there some kind soul out there who could possibly translate the article into English for the website? Please, please, email me! Again, my email is: thisbeciel(at)yahoo.com

24 December 2007: A great clip for the Stephanie Beacham (Blanche Ingram) fans- Stephanie was on "Strictly Come Dancing" in England this year (the American version of the show is called "Dancing With the Stars), and in the first documentary about her, they feature a clip from Jane Eyre!

28 October 2007: Many thanks to Pamela for a wonderful drawing of Jane and Rochester which is now displayed on the Extras section of the website.

13 October 2007: I've added a new section for the flubs, odd bits of knowledge, and fun facts about the miniseries. You can click the link on the side or go here- Trivia. A lovely picture is also included from an extra who once was a Lowood student. Many thanks to Amanda for her personal picture!

If there are any additional mistakes that anyone has noticed in the series, please let me know! I'm often too caught up in the story to notice!

12 September 2007: There's an additon to the 'Multimedia' section- "Don't Watch That Watch This" is a British 'mashup comedy' show, where they take existing footage and use editing and new audio/voiceovers to change the meaning. And yes, they used a clip of our Jane Eyre in one episode! MANY thanks to Simon for sending me this clip!
JE73 DWTWT (48 sec, 10 MB)

Also the fanmail address for Sorcha Cusack has received a response for one fan, so if you have ever wanted to let Sorcha know how much you loved this series, you can! :)

10 April 2007: Curtis M. has made the astonishing discovery that Anna Korwin, who plays Sophie in the 1973 series, played Sophie in the 1970 TV movie version with Susannah York as well! Pictures from both versions are included in the Biography section

30 March 2007: Added fanmail addresses for Sorcha Cusack and Michael Jayston to the Biography page. If anyone has any success with the addresses there, or any other current address, please send me an email and let me know! (thisbeciel(at)yahoo.com)

28 January 2007: Updated the Extras section with some icons I've made- scroll to the bottom to view them. I'll probably be adding more since I love making them!

4 December 2006: Well, this is mostly just "Jane Eyre" related- I have redone the "Enthusiast's Guide to Jane Eyre Adaptations" and added some more things besides overviews of available Jane Eyre adaptations. It now includes a comparison of the different proposal scenes with audio clips, and a list of other Janian adaptations -film, radio, and musical.

28 October 2006: Updated the Extras section with an utterly fantastic painting by J. Stowe (creator of the JE73 Multimedia Presentation Visit her site for more paintings) A very big thanks to the artist!!!

Also I have a message for Sueli- I have been trying to email you but I don't think you have received them- I've sent them to both of your addresses, could you send me another email address to try? I have much to say to you! :)

14 October 2006: Siansaksa has found a new article from the Daily Mail Weekend Magazine, where Sorcha and Michael are interviewed about their thoughts on working on JE73. To read the article, go here: "Vanished Into Thin Eyre" Even if they are not quite so well known as being in a starring role of a big BBC period drama might suggest, they are very much beloved by many devout fans, and I think they will not "vanish" into thin anything.

4 October 2006: Nothing really new to report in the world of JE73, but with the new Jane Eyre miniseries out now, I've been inspired to make a little something. I won't call it a trailer- more like a montage, using the music from the trailers for Jane Eyre 2006. Probably I shouldn't have, but I really liked the music. :) I've used a file hosting site (sendspace) from which you can download the file. It is 33 seconds long and is more or less 1 MB. Enjoy!
Jane Eyre '73 montage

26 August 2006: Provided a new link on my Links page to a extremely well-thought out multimedia presentation on Jane Eyre- it takes you through all the best parts of the series! http://themave.com/je/ Thanks for my Jane Eyre fix "themave"!

20 July 2006: Found another book cover with a still from Jane Eyre 1973. It seems that Pilot has interrupted Jane and Rochester's conversation. :) You can find the picture in the Publicity section

19 June 2006: Updated the links to download the picture zip files. I'm trying another website hosting service, so if people are having trouble downloading, please let me know so I can stop using that site. Also fixed some things in the scripts to Episodes Two and Three (Thanks very much for your help Arlene!)

14 June 2006: Put three pics up in "The Cast" section. They are from the UK DVD cover and courtesy of the very kind Siansaksa. Also cleaned up things here and there- sadly, the JE clips are no longer up on youtube, but that's okay because you can always buy the DVD! Yeah! :)

13 June 2006: Updated the Screencaps section with caps of the Picture Gallery, that is only included on the Region 2 DVDs. The caps were generously made by Siansaksa- many thanks to you for giving us unfortunate Region 1 inhabitants a look!

29 May 2006: The series is now available for preorder on Amazon- Amazon US / Amazon UK
And for those in the UK who would like to get it before June 5th- I do believe that you can purchase it now exclusively from the UK Acorn Media site

17 May 2006: Episode Five screencaps page is finished. The stills from the English as a Second Language Jane Eyre book are up as well- under the Publicity section or HERE. The cast list is also updated- mostly with members of Mr. Rochester's party guests. Next thing to add to this site, is a transcript of Episode One!

11 May 2006: Sorry for taking so long with this- Episode Five screencaps are done, but the picture page is not yet coded. In the meantime, here is the zip file: Episode five

8 May 2006: Screencaps for Episode Four are up. Bandwidth limits are very vexing though, so please download the zip files instead of viewing the pictures. Thanks to everyone who has done so. Here's the zip file for Episode four. Enjoy!

6 May 2006: Screencaps from Episodes Two and Three are up as well as links to download the pictures as a zip file- PLEASE DOWNLOAD THE ZIP FILE IF YOU ARE DOWNLOADING MANY PICTURES. It saves my bandwidth. Episodes 4&5 will follow shortly.

5 May 2006: I received my copy of the Jane Eyre 1973 DVD today!! I enjoyed it immensely, and having a clear picture does a world of good. Speaking of such, I have screencapped Episode One and updated the Pictures Index. The other episodes will follow soon. The extras on this DVD did not include a photo gallery which may only be on the UK release? There was filmographies and a biography of Charlotte Bronte however.

28 April 2006: Strange as it may seem, Acorn appears to be already selling this series exclusively on their website The status recently changed from backordered to in stock, and a few people have reported their orders have shipped already. I believe these are Region 1 DVDs, so make sure you can play them!

25 April 2006: UK DVD cover art!

Rather small I know, it's the biggest I could find. And you can now preorder the series on the UK website for HMV
Also updated the Publicity section- I received the Benham Silks commemorative card with a still from Jane Eyre 1973. There is a larger picture in the publicity section. It is very nice, I recommend buying one, there is one more left for sale on ebay

19 April 2006: A few more websites have popped up for pre-ordering, I thought I would put them up:
Acorn Online (U.S. division)
Blah DVD (U.K.)
Tesco (U.K.) From this website, they mention some special features:
Picture Gallery.
Cast Filmographies.
Biography of Charlotte Bronte.

The standard stuff then.

Also, Bronteana noticed some disparities between the runtimes for the U.S. and U.K. DVD releases. The U.S. release says it is 248 mins long, while the U.K. release says it is 275 mins long. This could be due to NTSC and PAL differences as Aidanbrack points out, but from a converter website, that would account for maybe half of the missing 27 mins. So I don't know what to think- but just to let people know. And if that wasn't depressing enough, this site now has July 25th as the release date for the U.S.!! I am really confused now...

11 April 2006: Thanks to Judith, I was alerted to the new DVD cover art for the American release!

3 April 2006: I hope this will be the final news on the subject- JE '73 will be released on DVD on JUNE 5th in the UK and JUNE 27th in the US. This information is accurate to the best of Acorn Media's director of program planning's knowledge.

1 April 2006: Well. I finally found a website where you can preorder a region 1 DVD. Yay. What is distressing however is the release date they have on the site: June 27, 2006. It says it will be 2 disc and the price is $39.98 which is higher than I expected- maybe it reflects extras and stuff? I'm probably being too hopeful. Other UK sites have surfaced for preordering as well:
BBC shop
Zeta Minor (just for information)
Biedroneczka found a picture of a JE '73 postcard once for sale on ebay- the picture is in the publicity section. And I would like to add a heartfelt thanks to everyone who has signed my guestbook- I really love to hear from fans, and I appreciate everyone's comments!

21 March 2006: Found an article from the New York Times about Jane Eyre '73! It is in the Publicity Section, scroll down to the American articles link. But here's the the link as well. It's the third article. And the answer to his idle question is Yes, people do still read Jane Eyre. idiot

20 March 2006: The translated transcript of Episode 5 is up (Thanks again to Sueli!) as well as most of Adele's French dialogue and translations in Episode 2 (Thanks philosophercat!). The Publicity section also has the addition of another book cover with Sorcha. This time I bought that book and hope to get it soon. There may be several black and white stills in it that I will scan and add to the website. Finally, I've uploaded 3 clips from Jane Eyre 1973 on a website called youtube. All of my Janian videos (from '73 and other versions) can be accessed here The Multimedia section has been updated with this information.

23 February 2006: The transcripts of the series are up now- BUT STILL INCOMPLETE! Episode 1 is missing, Adele's French bits are missing, and the translation of Episode 5 is coming shortly. I thought I'd just post what I had now since I worked all morning to fix it up, and in case people were waiting for them. The transcripts page has now replaced the synopsis page. Enjoy the lovely words!

20 February 2006: I found a day for the June release of the DVD- June 5th. Another UK website has appeared to preorder- choicesdirect.com STILL no sign of a US website with a preorder option. ...must have patience...

9 February 2006: Sad to say that the date for Jane Eyre's DVD release has been moved back to June of 2006. I have no exact date as of yet. Perhaps they need more time to put extras on the DVD? *hopes* Again, the US/UK release is supposed to be simultaneous. It may be possible to keep an eye on the US release through this website where Acorn Media tracks their upcoming releases. As of today they are providing information up until April 2006. In a couple months we might see more information!

2 February 2006: Adjusted the 'Extras' section- easier for dial-up users. Also made a couple animated gif images of two kissing scenes and added them to this section. Making these gifs are fun- does anyone have any requests?

1 February 2006: Expanded the Biographies section- now you can read bios (short as some may be) about Stephanie Beacham (Blanche), Geoffrey Whitehead (St. John), Edward de Souza (Mr. Mason), and Meg Jenkins (Mrs. Fairfax). More bios may be added soon. ...Three months and 1 week until Jane Eyre 1973 is released!!

30 January 2006: Added a new find made by Bronteana of an English as a second language version of Jane Eyre with Sorcha Cusack on the cover to the newly renamed 'Publicity' section. Still no sign yet of an opportunity for U.S. citizens to preorder their copy of Jane Eyre 1973- but I'm keeping an eye out and hope to add a link to the homepage soon! Oh yeah, and the transcripts are still forthcoming- it looks like we will have a Portuguese translation up as well though!

17 January 2006: Found out, through the wonderful Aidan, that you can preorder Jane Eyre 1973 in the UK through this website. Transcripts are still in progress

22 December 2005: Related the news that Jane Eyre will be released by Acorn Media on 8 May 2006. Special thanks to Sarah for emailing me this information. Also added a notice to the "Synopsis" section RE: transcripts.

13 December 2005: Added a banner to the Extras section. Can be seen as the last "extra"

3 December 2005: Added 'Article Citations' to the Radio Times section. Added an 'American Articles' headline for better organization. Again, if anyone has a copy of any articles referencing 'Jane Eyre' 1973, please let me know!

2 December 2005: Added JanePlaysPiano.mp3 to the multimedia section. Looked around and proclaimed all well

30 November 2005: Made the move from geocities to bravehost official, added a picture to the guestbook

27 November 2005: Updated Links section, added guestbook and counter, and created favicon

25 November 2005: Started creating this site

1 November 2005: Recieved an email from the head of programming for Acorn Media that Jane Eyre '73 will be released on DVD sometime next year.
